Roast Magazine

This excellent magazine has been floating around the roastery for a week or two now and I’ve been working my way through it, along with a number of other papers, articles and books.

These types of publications have the ability to get the reader really excited about what they’re doing, as if they were handing out inspiration “free with every issue”. Its great!

I find it’s all too easy to get over-comfortable with where you are. You cocoon yourself in a little world and eventually loose contact with what’s going on elsewhere. Before too long, your living in the past, doing the same old thing, whilst others are moving on and “pushing that envelope”. Ideally, you want to be riding the crest of the wave, not left behind in the whitewash.

There are some great, thought provoking articles in there, and little gems that answer questions you’ve been asking yourself for a while. Things like using environmentally sound Kraft bags to package roasted coffee – avoiding the ever-fresh illusion that valved foil/polymer bags present (one example from this issue), together with brilliant articles on the science behind coffee and the roasting process.

Why isn’t there a UK or European version though? It would be cool if there were.
